Dental Wings develops digital technology solutions for use in laboratories and dental clinics. In 2013, after receiving an Applied Research Tools and Instruments (ARTI) grant, Optech acquired specialized equipment for microassembling optical components that allowed Dental Wings to complete projects involving cutting-edge expertise.

Grant: ARTI
Partner: Dental Wings
Field: Biomédical

Using these acquisitions, Optech set up a specialized optical microsystems laboratory. The lab is used to reproduce industrial manufacturing conditions with a focus on automated micromanufacturing methods, microassembly and quality control.

“The specialized laboratory set up by Optech for microassembling optical components allowed Dental Wings to complete several projects requiring cutting-edge expertise, and its equipment portfolio allowed us to design and implement processes for assembling high-performance optical microsystems. Without local access to these skills and equipment, we would definitely have had to subcontract a larger part of our development outside Canada.”

Over the last few years, Optech has carried out many optics microassembly projects in a number of fields requiring high-precision optical components. In the biomedical field, integrating micro-optical devices into an assembly requires very strict assembly tolerances and the development of reliable, trackable processes that are scalable for industrial production.
